Welcome
Welcome to The JamHouse Forum.

Hi, I'm Tony Avery, founder of The JamHouse. The JamHouse is a free jam club whereby musicians and vocalists actually gather to jam and perform with one another in a friendly, easy going, non competitive, and fun atmosphere. The motto of The JamHouse is: Musicians Honoring Musicians. And it is within this spirit that we meet, play music, and socialize with one another.

The JamHouse Forum is an extension of The JamHouse and is used by The JamHouse members and guests to better know one another. The forum can also help in scheduling jams, rehearsals, gigs, parties, cookouts, and other events within our membership.

The original JamHouse provided a place where member musicians and vocalists could come to enjoy socializing with one another and to jam, form bands, rehearse, collaborate, and to have a great time playing the music they love. The JamHouse opened on Dec. 8th, 2007 with 23 members in attendance and has been going strong ever since. While originally our jams were held on private property we were subject to space limitations so our jams were open to a limited number of members per jam. Our member base has grown to the point where we now meet at local venues around Raleigh where our numbers can be better accommodated. Venues such as Fat Daddy's, Reds, Tailgaters, MVP's, The Pickled Onion, Bonedaddy's Hideaway, and The Korner Pocket.

By joining this free forum and music community, you will be able to read and post topics, you'll be able to communicate privately with other members (PM), respond to polls, upload content, and access many other special features such as email, right from our forum. Registration is fast, simple, and absolutely free. Our events are free also unless the event is held at a private club that requires a cover charge such as Bonedaddy's Hideaway.

JamHouse members receive notices and email invitations to jam. When you receive an invitation it is important that you RSVP your intentions to attend, or not, for any particular jam. Another musician can be invited in your place if you cannot be here. Playing time is limited even at venues around town, and we wish not to "over invite" which results in less quility playing time for all.

As a forum member you are encouraged to submit a member bio, song list, and any other info that will help members to better know one another. Of course attending our jams is a fast and fun way to meet other members.

Thanks for visiting The JamHouse Forum. Please call on me if I can be of any assistance to you.

Tony Avery - JamHouse Host, Band Promoter , acting JamHouse Booking Agent, & The JamHouse Forum Site Adminstrator.

The JamHouse says "Welcome, and congratulations to Saints & Scholars Irish Pub." Also look for a surprise below.

Hello to all JamHouse members and friends of TJH. I want to let you know about a new venue in town. Saints & Scholars Irish Pub is located at 909 Spring Forest Road near the intersection of Fall Of Neuse Road. It's located on the back side of where you see Jason's Deli, which can be seem from Spring Forest Road. Their phone number is 919-878-8828. Don't let the photo fool ya either, it's much larger than it looks. The tall section to the right is also part of S&S.

Saints & Scholars Irish Pub is giving off some really great vibes. It's new, richly decorated, has a great manager in Mr. James Wood, who is live music friendly by the way. And oh the food! The menu is amazing. Executive Chef Sean Mullen comes from Roscommon, Ireland. He graduated from culinary school in Galway, Ireland and has over 21 years of experience working in some of the busiest and best-known bars & restaurants in Galway. He has also worked in London, Frankfurt and Washington DC.

Sean relocated to Raleigh last year, and brings a wealth of experience, a first-hand knowledge of traditional Irish cooking. His family’s Irish recipes add authenticity to Saints & Scholars Irish Pub.

S&S also has some really cool bartenders and wait staff too. And, the bar itself... Oh the bar! Absolutely fantastic!

But wait, there's more. Surprise!! The JamHouse has it's first event at Saints & Scholars coming up on Saturday, March 3rd. Start time may be either 8pm or 9pm. Band details are in the works and will be forth coming. I think maybe a good ole jam may be in order for this first event. But get this... music ends at midnight. Wow! That's terrific. That works out well with us here within The JamHouse mix. Way cool.

Alright guys and gals. I'm asking for some good ole JamHouse support on March 3rd. Let's go in and help to welcome this fantastic and delightful new North Raleigh/Midtown venue to the neighborhood. Please RSVP if you can attend on March 3rd. And remember, you may be next to play.

Thanks every one,
T : )

It's a new and improved Total Strangers!

Well it's official... Total Strangers is awesome!

Total Strangers has new life and new songs and are better than ever. TS added a new member to the band, bassist Rich Carr. Rich brings some added life and spark to the mix. Lead singer Rob Philbeck no longer plays bass which has allowed Rob to fine tune his vocals. He's better than ever and enjoying himself more too. Along with Rich, drummer Mike Philbeck, continues to provide a thunderous back beat while guitarists Brian Smith and Robert Hendrix trade off leads and rhythm like hot butter on toast. Smooth and silky sweet.

Total Strangers has also added new covers to their set lists and are performing like a well oiled machine. Wait untill you hear TS doing "Eye Of The Tiger." Absolutely dead on.

My congratulations to Total Strangers. Very well done guys.

Put a little SWAG into your next event. You'll be glad you did.

This is Tony from The JamHouse. I'm sure you will remember the band Buffalo Springfield who sings a song with lyrics that go...

it's time we stop,
hey... what's that sound
everybody look what's goin down...

Yeah, you remember. As much as we all love classic rock from the days of our youth, sometimes original music just makes it's mark quickly and stands out as new and refreshing with a unique and interesting sound of it's very own. So it goes with a new band to hit Raleigh recently. The band is called SWAG.

SWAG hails from the Cary area and had been playing mostly around Durham until they made their Raleigh debut with The JamHouse on January 21, 2012. And what a debut it was. Playing their own original music, right from their opening song SWAG really stood out as an up and coming band that can add much to our local music scene. As pictured left to right meet Scott, Diane, Kurt, Ray, and Tim.

As one who was immediately a fan of SWAG's unique sound and interesting lyrics I hope we will hear much more from SWAG. So what is that sound? The band describes them selves this way:

"SWAG's genre of music is challenging to define. We perform mostly original music that blends rock, blues, 60's surf music and even a little bit of punk into a unique sound."

The band also refers to their style and label as "Swag Home Brew". I like that. Very cool.

Well there you go. Even the band members of Swag themselves are saying " Hey, what's that sound?" Whatever you may call it, SWAG presents a sound to an audience that's hard hitting in that it grabs your attention quickly and draws you right into their lyrics and the message their music delivers.

So don't wait. When you see that SWAG is performing near you, by all means go hear this band. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for reading,
Tony @ The JamHouse :)

Let's find a new location to host JamHouse jams and shows. Your help is appreciated.

Well 2011 has been lots of fun filled with great music and fantastic folks. It's been a pleasure to know each of you who have played in our jams and shows and also those who have attended our events as fans and friends of The JamHouse. After a year and a half of hosting shows at The Korner Pocket I have decided to take some time off. As of Feb. 1, I no longer will be hosting shows at TKP.

After some time off however, I will be open to finding a new home for The JamHouse. A new location to host our bands and jam friends would be really cool. If something good comes along I will continue with the fun. If you can recommend a fun place let me know. Either way, hosting or not, I look forward to an enjoyable new year in 2012 and hope to be seeing all of you a lot this coming year. Please keep me informed of your band's gig dates. I'll be happy to advertise your shows and I'll attend them as I can.

In the meantime, I'd love to jam a little with any of you. I'll soon have my original private JamHouse ready and set up for jamming as it was in the early days. I hope to hear from some of you.

Tony : )

Let's crank up the old original JamHouse! Also click here for some fun stuff.

Hello, Tony here. Well I've been working really hard on keeping things lively with our music club. And with cooperation and the very good vibes of all of you JamHouse members 2011 was a lot of fun. It's been over a year since I myself have played bass and I wanna get back into actually playing again. Before I forget, you can click on the title tab above to check out some photos of past jams held at the original JamHouse.

I'd like to find a few musicians who would like to get together occasionally to jam for fun. We can jam at my original JamHouse in North Raleigh. Many of the long time JamHouse members will remember our jam sessions there from long ago and the fun we used to have at "The JamHouse." You newer JamHouse members know little, if anything, about the original JamHouse. But be rest assured that in it's time the original JamHouse was the place to be for many area musicians and vocalists seeking a fun place to jam and to socialize.

Right now I'm interested in playing some of the older cover tunes of the 50's, 60's, and 70's pop/top 40/radio era. Songs that don't get played much any more but are fun and when heard bring back fond memories of a more simple time. I like artists such as Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, Gary Lewis, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Willie and the Boys, John Prine, and groups like Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Herman's Hermits, CCR, America, Three Dog Night, Buffalo Springfield, The Moody Blues, and others. But you should get the idea.

You should have similar availability, interest, and purpose as myself for this jam project. Namely:

1- This project will be for our fun only. We'll jam for our own enjoyment. We'll even practice as we see fit. And if we desire to "jam" out together, such as at some of The JamHouse events, we'll not take it so seriously that playing together tunes into work. So don't be hard core. Leave your ego at home, along with any drama, drug, or alcohol problems. Don't bring them in with you.

2- Be easy going, fun loving, with a good attitude toward music and musicians in general. Be sociable and be prepared to be flexible and patient when dealing with the group, especially with those who are not yet as skilled as you.

3- Have enough spare time already available to you that you are free to establish and follow a weekend schedule without it complicating your home life.

4- We will be jamming at my second home, The original JamHouse. Therefore their will be certain "house rules" that will be established as guidelines for us all to follow. Such as:

*** No smoking inside.
*** Social drinking is OK. But you should not arrive having been drinking already. If your drinking gets excessive I will ask you to stop your consumption so you can later safely drive home.

6- Plan to jam only on Saturdays. An occasional Sunday session can be arranged as a back up if a certain Saturday will not work. Our jam time will be somewhere between the hours of noon and 6pm. This gives a six hour flexible window for our group to establish a start and stop time for each individual jam session as it best fits into our groups overall availability.

Together, the group will tackle any other issues that may arise. Let's just have some fun, play some music, and should we desire to we can jam some together at some of the JamHouse events.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to contact me at any time.

Thanks to LONG TIME GONE and to TOMMY THUNDERFOOT AND THE ACCELERATORS for a great time.

Thanks to two fantastic bands, LONG TIME GONE and TOMMY THUNDERFOOT AND THE ACCELERATORS, who entertained us at our JamHouse Christmas Party and Show Saturday night Dec. 17th at The Korner Pocket. The place was packed, spirits were bright, and we enjoy some fantastic music, friends, and the best bar food in town.

Thanks too to Kris, Pa Man of Raleigh, for providing sound for our party. Kris is a dedicated professional and did an outstanding job.

Thanks to all those who have supported The JamHouse and our many musicians, vocalists, and bands throughout 2011.

Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Congratulations on a new "band showcase" event at Volume 11. And thanks to Steve Msarsa and Montrendus.

Just wanted to compliment, and thank, Steve Msarsa of the band Motrendus, for putting on and hosting a fantastic jam and show last night at Volume 11. What a terrific night of great sounding original tunes played by some of Raleigh's hottest "play as loud as we want to" rock bands. Yes, this show was hot. Yes, this show was loud. And yes, the bands and the audience wanted it that way. There was a great turn out for this first Wednesday night showcase. The audience really enjoyed the show and showed their appreciation for all who played.

Another great thing about this new showcase is it's early start time. After all, it is mid week. Bands, and fans, who had to drive in from out of town got a chance to play early, hear a lot of great music, have a blast, and get home before the sun came up. Fantastic. And, more of these Wednesday night jams and shows are being scheduled.

I must say that I now have a new appreciation for the louder side of Rock. This was a learning experience for me and I had a blast. So, thank you Steve and Motrendus, and thank you Keith of Volume 11, for providing this new opportunity to showcase more of our friends and bands who just want to play loud. I'd say this show was "Success On The Loud Side."

My congratulations to all who performed and to all who supported this new effort to promote and showcase the louder side of rock.

Names of some of the bands who performed last night can be seen below in a copy of Steve's original posting promoting last night's show. There were some additions I don't have the names for. All of them were great. Thanks for reading. Tony : )

John Lennon & The Beatles Tribute Show

John Lennon was tragically taken from us on Dec. 8th, 1980. George Harrison died on Nov. 29th, 2001. In honor of all of the Fab Four, The JamHouse is holding a tribute to John Lennon & The Beatles this Saturday night, Dec. 3rd, 8pm till 1am at The Korner Pocket.

You will hear from the bands LARSEN, THE MAGIC DADDYS, 9RED, and a jam band or two made up of some of our JamHouse jam friends. All playing Beatles tunes with no repeat songs. This will be a great show with some Beatles trivia shared with the audience.

Don't miss this show. It's going to be a lot of fun. And, there is no cover charge. You'll also enjoy some fantastic bar food, beer, and drinks, served up by a great staff.

Thanks for reading.

A story about Yoni Markus and about The JamHouse. Click here for photos, a chance to win a prize, and more about Yoni and The JamHouse:

Read the following carefully. It could be worth a prize valued at $40 to you:

To all you JamHouse members who remember our friend from Israel, Yoni Markus, Yoni sends his best wishes and says hello to everyone. I remember Yoni Markus very well. I found Yoni to be both a great person to play music with and a great person to talk with as well. He was courious about all things American and was a movie buff. Although he was sometimes quiet and reflective Yoni had a great sence of humor and was eager to laugh and to see the lighter side of things. Yoni appreciated all of you who he got to know and he was very thankful for the friendship he found here.

Good luck to you Yoni. I hope we meet again some day.

Your friend in music and in life.

Tony : )

Now check out some pics of JamHouse member Yoni Markus. The first few pics reflect Yoni's life back in Tel Aviv. I'm glad to say that Yoni is happy being back home and he's doing very well. Most of the pics are from some very fun and happy times while Yoni lived in and played music in The JamHouse. More pics will be added later so check back from time to time.

--
To see a photo show of how The JamHouse first got started in December of 2007 and to see pics of Yoni while he lived in The JamHouse in 2008 click on the following link.

http://www.photoshow.com/watch/bq4Ai4Bb This is some great memories for me. I hope you enjoy it.

*** Don't forget to click on the title at the top of this posting. Keep reading and viewing the pics. One photo is sort of a trick shot. Try to figure out how this shot was set up to get the result seen in the photo. Hint, one item in the pic gives the answer. Once you let your eye take in this one item the answer should be fairly easy to conclude. You may win that JamHouse tee shirt, a $20 value, plus a $20 bar tab for the next time you attend one of our jams or shows. Just a little something for fun. ***

Robert Hendrix hosted his birthday bash and jam Saturday evening, Oct. 15th, at The Korner Pocket.

Many came out to The Korner Pocket this Saturday night, Oct. 15th to wish our friend Robert Hendrix of the band Total Strangers a happy birthday. Robert hosted a jam session too and had many to take the stage with him. There was also a performance by Robert and his band Total Strangers.

Robert hosted his birthday bash last year too and just like last year this year's birthday bash was fantastic and full of fun, jam friends, and some great music. The photo at left shows a fan getting a close up view of Robert's guitar skills.

See more of good times with Robert at: http://www.photoshow.com/watch/MM6Cn6Vz

Happy Birthday Robert!

Hey, what's that void in Raleigh? A note to Purple and BoneDaddy's.

Hi Purple, thanks for coming out to TKP for our Halloween show. That's a great costume by the way. I just want to say that with BoneDaddy's no longer open there is a huge void in the night life around here. I miss the club a lot. It was always very comforting knowing that at almost any time I could mosey on down to BoneDaddy's and see familiar faces and hear some tunes.

I hope things will improve and that you can get BoneDaddy's open again. You had one of the best live music venues in Raleigh. A fantastic club, great sound system, stage, and lights. You did those things very well. The current situation with our nation's economy did you in.

Purple, you and BoneDaddy's are greatly missed.

Your friend in music and in life,
Tony

Raleigh Music Notes. What's happening with our venues? Random Thoughts. Click here for more.

In our current economy a place where your band can play, a place where even you as a jam performer can play, are being lost. Support our JamHouse shows and jams. Help keep the venues where we now enjoy playing open and vibrant. "Random Thoughts" and "Raleigh Music Notes" are blogs I am working on, not yet published. They may end up being seperate blogs put probably will be combined as one. Either way, there will be a little history, some current facts, and some random thoughts about some of our local venues and other topics concerning our local music scene.

There will be additions to this tab made by me as things developments. But anyone can contribute. So feel free to jump on board and add you own random thoughts and concerns about our local music scene. Just click on the heading above, then click on the prompt you'll get one more time. You'll then be able to read content and and contribute if you wish. Stay tuned and check back once in a while.

SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO US ALL:
RSVP's to JamHouse invitations to jam and to our shows greatly helps me in planning our events. I'm very aware that you as an individual cannot make all jams and shows. I know you are busy. But I need to know when to reserve time for YOU to jam. If I don't get enough response for jam time I have to fill voids with additional bands. That's just how it's gotta work. Our venues are not going to give us a place to play if we don't bring people into their venue. So we need either or both jam folks or bands to play. Your RSVP's can make us, or break us. So please take a moment to respond to invitations you receive from The JamHouse.

"No, I'm not coming." is just as important as a "Yes. I plan to attend and want to jam."

Just some "Random thoughts" for you to consider. Now click on the heading above to read some random thoughts, facts, best guesses, and some history about our local music scene. Add your own comments too if you will.

SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC
Thanks,
T

P.S.
Thanks to Tim Lassiter for the "Random Thoughts" bubble he drew. I've "borrowed it" Tim. Hope you don't mind.

Bushhawg set The White Oak Grill afire! Click here for photos:

Yeah, that's right. The Bushhawg Band played at TWOG on Sunday, Sept. 11. They were fantastic as usual with a great selection of southern and classic rock covers. Their sound was flawless, their guitars blazing, drums and bass thundering, with lead vocals, backup vocals and harmonies perfect. It was a great time. Thanks for a great show Bushhhawg.

Thanks to Rhett and the staff of TWOG too. They provided free burgers and the trimmings during this show. There was a good crowd enjoying the band, the food and drink, a beautiful day, and friends having a blast.

I think it's time that Bushhawg made their way over to The Korner Pocket. Watch for more news on that. Click the heading above to see photos taken at the show at TWOG.

It's peace, love, and deja vu all over again. Woodstock 2011!

Update Posted Aug. 22, 2011:

The Woodstock Music Festival of 1969 celebrates it's 42nd birthday this August, 2011. The JamHouse remembered and celebrated those good ole days by having a jam and show at The Korner Pocket on Saturday, Aug. 20th.

Some of us dressed the part, bell bottoms, peace emblems, head bands, love beads, etc. and flowers in hair. It was like crazy...man. And, way cool too. Groovy. This was a huge show with many surprises for us musically speaking.

We had great response from some fantastic bands who performed during this special show. We'll relived those three days of peace and love for about six hours. Through our band's we remembered and honored CSN&Y, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Joe Cocker, Joan Baez, The Band, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, CCR, The Dead, Country Joe & The Fish, and others from that late 60"s era that resulted in over 30 bands of the day entertaining around a half million like minded people over a three day period. What a glorious time it must have been to actually have attended this event in 1969.

Our Woodstock 2011 bands were:

8pm- The North Forty Band
9pm- Over Easy
10pm- The Magic Daddys
11pm- Long Time Gone
12am- Spellbound

This was really a special show about a special time in our history. To see a photo show presentation of our Woodstock Revival 2011 show please click this link: http://www.photoshow.com/watch/EK8xn3Wn

Now to refresh you on some Woodstock history watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StFhvAIv ... ure=fvwrel

RubberSoul but on a fantastic show at The Korner Pocket:

As pictured on the left, Tommy, Henry, Jim, and Ash, of the Beatles Tribute Band, RubberSoul, played The Korner Pocket Saturday night, Aug. 6th. Not only did they sound great, they looked great too, in matching suits reminicent of the Fab Four's early days. The folks at TKP, both the staff and the audience, were amazed and well pleased with RubberSoul's offering of that great Beatles sound of a time gone by. With that fantastic Beatles sound and that Fab look, I'd say that RubberSoul is a class act.

Thanks for your show last night guys. Once again let me just say how much I enjoyed your music. I congratulate all of you on a job well done. RubberSoul is a fitting tribute to The Beatles.

I look forward to more of your shows soon.

Yours in music and in friendship,

Tony

Sheet Metal & The North Forty Band plays The White Oak Grill Saturday, Aug. 13th.

For some fantastic metal rock you'll want to hear Sheet Metal as they open up the show at The White Oak Grill this Saturday night. These guys are awesome. You'll gonna wonder why they haven't played WOG before. Catch them around 9pm.

Coming up later around 10:30pm you'll also hear The North Forty Band. Playing a variety of classic rock from the 60's to the 80's these guys get it on too. You'll hear some all time rock favorites and be surprised by some classic's that you'll remember as having been fantastic in their day but somehow since got lost over the past 20 years. You'll be glad they're back. The North Forty Band will also be celebrating a birthday too, so it's really going to be a party. Bring it on.

The White Oak Grill also features some of the best bar food anywhere. The staff is friendly and ready to ensure you have the best time possible and they serve you the coldest beer and best mixed drinks around while you enjoy some of the best music in town. And, there's no cover charge.

Outdoor show at Sharon's Country Lounge. Details below:

Some of our JamHouse members and jam friends enjoyed an open air, under the stars, concert and cookout on Saturday, July 23rd, from 12 noon till 10pm at Sharon's Country Lounge. Located just north of Wake Forest on Highway 1A, Sharon's is a rustic and country type bar surrounded by shade trees, horse shoe pits, a lawn for your chairs or blankets, and an outdoor titi bar. In case of rain the music will be moved inside to the main bar or perhaps rescheduled. If rescheduled we'll still have a band or two playing on the 23rd.

We heared some of our fantastic JamHouse bands and enjoy freshly grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken with all the trimmings. This event is also a benefit with proceeds from the cookout going to a school program, BACK PACKS FOR KIDS. We had some quality jam time for our jam friends too. The schedule of bands were:

12 noon- Armour
1:30 PM- Superstition
2:30 PM- Open Jam Session
4:00 PM- 9Red
5:30 PM- Jehovah's Witness Protection Program
7:00 PM- Total Strangers
9:00 PM- Open Jam Session till 10 PM or later.

Thanks for reading.

Bear's Coice, Shelter, and The Magic Daddys play at The Korner Pocket Saturday, July 16th.

The JamHouse welcomed a new duo act to our show on Saturday, July 16th. The acoustic duo BEAR'S CHOICE entertained us with an hour of acoustic "Dead" music. BEAR'S CHOICE has been well received in Raleigh and this is very cool music. Catch BEAR'S CHOICE when you can.

We also had the rock, pop, and blues band SHELTER as our featured band. Bringing us many fantastic songs from the last three decades SHELTER is a very energetic and fun band with both female and male lead vocals with the rest of the band also providing vocals. A lot of fun and energy.

Around 11 PM we had THE MAGIC DADDYS on stage for some late night fun and mayhem with a fantastic trio of strong classic covers you don't often hear out. Unique and refreshing. Afterword we turned the stage over to our jam friends who come in to play for more fun.

See you next time.
Thanks,
Tony @ The JamHouse

We had something for everybody no matter of musical taste and all our bands were well received. High Park is a very nice venue and it is huge. I hope The JamHouse can book some more shows at High Park. It wil be a hoot playing shows and jamming there.

I appreciate all the bands that played last night and thanks also to our friends who came out to hear the show. It was a real blast.

Thanks for reading. See ya next time. So what's next? Check our Calendar. See the link near the top of this page.

For now though, take a look at our slide show of our High Park show of last night.

Thanks T :)

Hey, who is the band 9Red? Watch the slide show, the link is below. Then you'll know.

June 18th, 2011:
OK folks, the new band 9Red made their debut with The JamHouse Saturday night, June 18, during our show at The Korner Pocket.
9Red plays some really great cover tunes but specializes in some really fun and interesting original material and they burned it up at TKP.

Some members of 9Red have played together as a jam band and have jammed with The JamHouse before. Now, ready and feeling the need to play as a
stand along band, 9Red was our headliner at tonights show. Some of our jam friends also joined 9Red on stage and brought the house down. What a great time.

The Christaian Rock Band ARMOUR opened up for 9Red. ARMOUR is absolutely a power rocking band by any discription, Christian Rock Band or otherwise. They were great.

Thanks to ARMOUR, to 9Red, and to our jam friends who rocked TKP. Here is a link to the slide show of 9Red. A slide show of ARMOUR will be coming up when ARMOUR plays at TKP again on July 16th. Check back for that.

Tony

In Memoriam. Chuck Leonard. Master Drummer, Friend, And A Great Musician. Click here to celebrate Chuck's life in photos:

Our good friend Chuck Leonard passed away early morning, June 25th, 2011. Chuck had been battling cancer for the last couple of years. For those of you who may not have known Chuck as well as some others, please know that Chuck was a well respected and admired Master Drummer.

In the earlier days of R&B, Motown, Soul, Jazz, Funk, and Rock & Roll, Chuck played with and recorded with many of the old greats, such as Smoky Robinson, The Four Tops, and The Supremes, throughout the late 60's to early 80's. Please see more at: http://www.robertgriffin.com/bluespot/chuck.html

I first met Chuck on August 16th, 2008 when he arrived at our original JamHouse to jam and meet some of our jam members. Chuck, the man, was a very happy person with smiles and kind words for every one he met. Chuck became a member of The JamHouse that day and later actually lived at the original JamHouse itself, where he offered much support, tutoring, friendship, and love to many of us. We had some very special jams with Chuck where it seemed Chuck floated effortlessly across those drums. What a delight it was to see and hear a Master at his profession. Chuck was beyond description when he played.

Chuck always had a great time with us at The JamHouse, and we with him. I loved Chuck. I miss those days and I miss Chuck.

Tony

From Tim Lassiter:

I am sad to hear about Chuck. He was a great friend to the Jamhouse and a big inspiration on me especailly. I learned a lot from Chuck. He was like the song "Don't Worry Be Happy". We will miss him for sure. Thanks for the pictures. They bring back some fantastic memories. - Tim

From Cricket Frazier:

Rest In Peace Chuck...

I've never met another musician that moved me the way you did. May heaven be full of samba and merengue!!!

Chuck Leonard taught me plenty about rhythm, but incredibly, that can't hold a candle to what he taught me about soul.

There are 2 things that Chuck taught me that have competely changed my view and my attitude about playing music. The first is that he really showed me the beauty of mathematics...in particular, the way we humans FEEL math...the way we NEED to feel the math, just as we need to feel good language in literature, poetry and prose. The second is that one of my favorite quotes of all times came from Chuck. He once told me "It doesn't matter what song you play ...you just have to play it better than anyone else."

We will miss you Chuck...
